Abstract

The research is devoted to the connections of Turkic Muslims of the Russian and Ottoman empires at the turn of 19th-20th centuries. The first part examines the conditions of Islamic pilgrimage from Russia to Hijaz, namely routes, quarantines and epidemics, as well as main issues related to staying on the territory of the Ottoman empire, relations with Turkish religious leaders, Sufi sheikhs and government officials. It also contains an analysis the attitude of Russian Muslims towards the Balkan War based on Russian and Ottoman printed media materials.

The second part of the monograph is devoted to the visits of Ottoman intellectuals to Russia, who wanted to explore economic, cultural and educational state of the Volga region’s Muslims. The World War I was an ordeal for Russian Muslims: being loyal to the Russian empire, they also supported Ottoman war prisoners in Russia. Basing on the memoirs of Turkish officers captured in Russia, the author analyses their vision of Russia and the condition of Tatar Muslims.
