Translation of the 1st volume of “Theology and society in the 2nd-3rd century AH” is out of print

The 1st volume of the fundamental six-volume work of the distinguished contemporary German Islamic scholar Joseph van Ess, “Theology and Society in the 2nd-3rd  century AH” under the title “The history of Religious Thought in Early Islam” has been published in Russian for the first time.

The work is devoted to the intellectual history of early medieval Muslim society and represents the most profound study of Muslim theology (qalam) in the light of the history of the formation of intellectual and religious thought in the Islamic East. There are no equals to this work in the Russian academic literature.

The book was translated from German by P. Kazaku and edited by I. Nasyrov. The edition was prepared and published by the Sadra publishing house with the assistance of the RAS Institute of Philosophy and the Ibn Sina Foundation, with the approval of the German publishing house Walter De Gruyter GmbH.

The book will be of interest to a wide range of readers interested in the philosophical and cultural heritage of the Islamic world.
